         Roadworks are undertaken by the following organisations:

• The County Council branded as West Sussex Highways - these are generally works being undertaken to maintain and repair the roads and footways.
• Highways England - run by Central Government to maintain and repair trunk roads and motorways such as A27, A23 and M23.
• Public utility companies (gas, water, electricity, etc.) - these companies have a right to access their cables, pipes and equipment for maintenance, repair and replacement, and often need to dig up the road to do this.
